BANC Annual General Meeting 2009

This year's BANC members' visit and AGM will take place on Saturday 3rd October at Alkborough Flats in north Lincolnshire.

The managed realignment at Alkborough, at the confluence of the rivers Trent and Ouse, is one of the largest in Europe. It will allow flood water from the Humber Estuary to spill out of the river during highest tides to fill the low-lying land. Substantial new areas of saltmarsh, mudflat and freshwater reedbed habitat are being created. The site is jointly owned by the Environment Agency, Natural England and Associated British Ports, while a wider partnership of organisations is helping to fulfil the vision.

All BANC members are invited to attend ... details follow. Numbers are limited to 20, i.e. the capacity of the two available minibuses, which are essential to travel the vastness of the Flats. Please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, by contacting Adrian Koster on 01482-881674 or at AdrianKoster (at) onetel (dot) com.

12:30pm Meeting starts at Julian's Bower, a turf-cut maze with an intriguing history. This elevated position offers a commanding view of the Alkborough Flats project.

1:00pm Visit to Alkborough Flats
Anna Moody, Alkborough Flats’ site manager, will guide BANC members around this vast site of 450 hectares, once farmland, now tidally influenced since the breaching of the Humber Estuary flood bank in September 2006. BANC members will witness a vast transitional habitat, part of a huge scheme to restore some of the Humber estuary’s natural flood basins and to create a haven for wildlife - especially birdlife. Since the breach approximately 170 hectares of Alkborough Flats floods at each high tide, dramatically, dynamically and progressively altering the site's character. Alkborough Flats lies within the Humber Estuary European Marine Site, formed from the Humber Estuary SPA, SAC and Ramsar site.

3:30pm BANC AGM & review at Alkborough Cricket Club, with tea, coffee & biscuits. Founded ca. 1850 the club plays in the Lincolnshire Cricket Premier League. On the club-house roof is a Grim Reaper weather vane, just like Lord's!

The AGM is important!  There BANC's financial accounts are validated and its Council is elected. If you plan to attend, please send an e-mail to enquiries@banc.org.uk or telephone Graeme Duckworth on 07941-182211 as soon as possible.

Please consider standing for BANC's Council.  It is made up of volunteer members who give their time (four meetings per year, plus three to four days of other work) to ensure that BANC fulfils its charitable aims.  It is a legal and practical necessity - BANC cannot function and develop without it. BANC particularly needs people with knowledge/skills in the following areas: fund-raising, marketing and business management.

BANC members wishing to stand for Council should submit their name and contact details, together with a brief supporting statement (roughly 50 words) and the name of a proposer, who must also be a BANC member. Please send nominations by Sunday 27th September to enquiries@banc.org.uk or telephone Graeme Duckworth on 07941-182211.
